We hosted Belgrave at our first Remembrance Day match and it was a proud moment for both clubs when players from all 4 sides from each club attended a service prior to the start of play. The 1st XI Players wore specially made shirts for the match and we also had a fantastic set of stumps made up for the game. The conclusion of the match saw a joint social function with both clubs attending a dinner and some live music to finish off a great occasion. Our thanks to the Belgrave C.C and the RSL for making this a truly memorable match.
The boys batted first and it only took a couple of balls until we lost a wicket. Wellsy joined Huss at the crease and a 138 run partnership steered us clear of the early danger. Wellsy was particularly happy to restrict his scoring shouts to boundaries until he was out shortly after tea for 53. Steve Moore joined Huss and chipped in with 20 before departing and Darren Spence came to the crease and produced perhaps one of his finest innings being involved in over 140 runs of partnerships and knocking up 64. Chris Jewell was again superb making 87 before being trapped plumb LBW. Nick Whitty, Cam wheeler and Strahany contributed superbly at the end of the innings to get is to a score of 8/299. On the second day Wheels got in early taking the prize wicket of John Levell and with Strahany holding a tight line at the other end he was able to attack throughout his opening spell. The conditions didnt suit Liam Dunning and Ben Wood and Benny with the dampness making it hard for them to maintain their balance at the crease. Enter Steve Moore and continued spells from Cam Wheeler and the boys were able to keep pressure on the Belgrave boys and wickets fell with good regularity. In the end we are able to get Belgrave out for 160 with Cam Wheeler taking 6/53 and Steve Moore taking 4/34.
The 2nds travelled to Belgrave and bowled first and had their work cut out for them with the Belgrave top order working diligently to make runs until Luke Manion came to the crease and blasted a masterly 110 and with plenty of support the boys found themselves chasing a total of 335, Jake Fisher in his first match in the 2nds took 2 wickets. In reply we were able to notch up 225 with Brenton Hurst making 73 and Jordan Tailby making 34.
The 3rds were on the patch and ended up making 8/354 with Nick Somervaille continuing his good form with 90. Kev Hayward loves missing the milestones and fell for 49. Steve Bedson made 52 with Lachie Hughes making 39 and Jay William 38. Unfortunately it wasnt enough and Belgrave passed us with an over or 2 to spare making 8/360. Darren Buck was the pick of the bowlers with 5/60 and Shane Cross strained a hamstring restrictng him to just 8 balls.
The 4ths traveled up to Menzies Creek and made 231 with Matty Anderson, Jack Squires, Lachy Dennis, Tom Barnard all getting into the 30's and Ben Butterfield finally getting amongst some runs with 25 much to his relief. In reply we got Belgrave out for 164 with John Hevern the pick oif the bowlers picking up 3/15. Lachy Dennis grabbed 3/47 and Nick wood 2/15.
Juniors
The U/12 team took on Lysterfield and had them all out for 72 with Matty Milner, Leigh McVicar and Jethro Cousins all taking 2 wickets. In reply we made 7/172 with Noah Weston top scoring with 21. Sam Wicks, Leigh McVicar, Matty Milner and Atticus Todd all getting amongst the runs. A great second win for the boys.
The U/14's hosted Olinda and the boys made 2/184 with Josh McMeekan and Sam Holdsworth both making 50 not out and Aiden Beattie retired on 24. In reply Olinda with the help of way too many extras by our bowlers were able to pass our score and make 2/204 with Luke Campbell and Benjamin Matthews both taking a wicket.
The U/16 traveled to Johnson Park and had a really good tough match. The boys made 8/142 with Lachy Jansen making 45 and Jackson Brown making 38 and Mark Absom making 22. In reply we got Johnson park 8/138 with Mark Absom the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets.
